Searching for the Universe's Missing Matter

The DarkSide experiment uses ultra-pure liquid argon detectors deep underground at LNGS to search for dark matter particles and explore the unknown.

About

Dark Matter

Dark Matter makes up about 85% of the matter in the Universe, yet it does not emit, absorb, or reflect light. We know it exists because of its gravitational effects on galaxies and cosmic structures. DarkSide aims to detect dark matter particles directly through their rare interactions with ordinary matter.

The DarkSide

Building on the success of DarkSide-50, DarkSide-20k is a next-generation dark matter and neutrino observatory under construction at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. Using massive liquid argon detectors installed deep underground, the experiment is designed to capture the rare interactions that could reveal the nature of dark matter. DarkSide has developed new technologies to build one of the world's most sensitive dark matter experiments. DarkSide-20k will help scientists explore one of the universe's greatest mysteries.
